Jerome, AZ

Arizona' s largest ghost town. It was an old copper mining town. Founded in 1876 but very popular in the 1920's when the population peaked at 15,000. But then the Depression hit and the mining slowed down. In the late 50's the mines closed.

Today, Jerome is National Historic Landmark. The population is at about 480. Not bad for a small historical town. A fun place to spend a few hours in passing through. Lots of little antique shops, souvenir shops, quaint diners (one called the haunted burger), and lots of tourists.

There are several historic hotels to stay at. The Jerome Grand Hotel I think used to be an old hospital. It is right next to the Surgeon's House B&B. I wonder if there are really ghosts in these hotels and shops......

On the way home we got stuck in 1 1/2 hr traffic. At one point we were at a complete stop. The freeway closed because of a fatal accident that happened just 2 miles North of our exit. We made the best of it and got out to have a snack. Funny how that 1 1/2 hr was all it took us to get to Jerome, but on the way home it doubled.
